Description

Description

Egypt, which has extremely low rainfall, is one of the most water-poor countries in the world. Its agriculture, which uses 80% of the annual fresh water available - almost entirely Nile water - for irrigation, is suffering from water shortages. The negative effects of climate change that are already foreseeable today, such as rising temperatures, higher evaporation rates and the salinization of coastal waters due to rising sea levels, will exacerbate the problem of water shortages. With water availability per capita decreasing, increasing agricultural water productivity is the only practical way to secure irrigated agriculture as a source of income for the predominantly poor (small) farmers. The project is jointly financed by several donors and has two components. On the one hand, there is the intensification of the irrigation sector dialogue between the Egyptian Water Ministry and the participating donors with the aim of contributing to increasing the coherence of sector reform planning and its implementation. The second component is the financing of necessary investments in the rehabilitation and expansion of the irrigation canal network, the national drainage system and irrigation and drainage pumping stations
