The project involves expanding the nation's electric vehicle charging capacity through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, funded federally as part of the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law. Wisconsin received an allotment of $78 million, with 53 projects awarded in May 2024. Before the program was temporarily frozen, 39 agreements worth $16 million were signed, with eight projects completed and five under construction. The program was suspended early in 2025 by the Trump administration but has since been revived following a federal court ruling and new guidance issued by the U.S. Transportation Secretary.
