The project involves building out electric vehicle charging stations in Wisconsin as part of the $5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, which is part of the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law. Wisconsin was one of the first states to participate, receiving $78 million in federal grants. The state awarded 53 projects in May 2024, signed 39 agreements accounting for $16 million before the program was temporarily frozen. Eight projects have been completed and five are under construction. The program was suspended by the Trump administration but has since been revived following a federal court ruling and new guidance issued by the U.S. Transportation Secretary.
