Description
Description | Korea’s first fire training facility on the wayThe National Emergency Management Education & Research Complex project was designed to expand the National Fire Service Training Center and the National Civil Defense and Disaster Management Training Institute and relocate them to Gongju in Chungcheongnam-do in order to improve the deteriorated environment of these institutes and establish a global-level fire fighting training center. The construction site houses 39 buildings and four structures. Hyundai E&C was devoted to establishing the education and research complex in an eco-friendly way using a high-efficiency energy storage system (ESS) and geothermal and solar heat as energy sources in an aim to secure the durability of the buildings. The top task of the construction site was how the buildings would be placed in a vast area. To do this, the builder considered various characteristics of the facilities and divided the construction area into five sections such as administration and lecture, dormitory, welfare, fire-fighting drill, and hands-on training for disaster prevention. In addition, it embarked on analyzing the needs of users to build pedestrian paths and driving roads. One of the main facilities within the complex is considered an area for fire-fighting drills where nine buildings are set in a real-life city, which is Asia’s largest and Korea’s first fire training facility. Fire simulators were installed in respective training areas designed to extinguish fire in multipurpose, high-rise buildings and respond to chemical and collapse accidents, enabling trainees to participate in tactical training programs which meet such different situations. On top of this, to prevent the construction schedule from being delayed because the government-furnished construction materials failed to be supplied in a timely manner, the construction site took into account the total project costs from the early stage of the project upon ordering the construction materials furnished by the government. The National Emergency Management Education & Research Complex is expected to serve as a new venue to produce highly capable firefighters by increasing the number of trainees from 100,000 to 350,000 on a yearly basis. |
