Description

Description

The Trump administration declared a national energy emergency to speed the development of fossil fuel projects, mines, pipelines, and other energy-related infrastructure. This declaration cuts the amount of time federal agencies are required to notify Indigenous nations before starting a project, reducing the review period for tribal historic preservation officers from 30 days to 7 days. As a result, 186 projects with an emergency designation have been cleared to begin construction, including controversial projects like Line 5 in Minnesota. The administration's budget proposal for 2026 includes a 94 percent cut to the fund supporting the national Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) program, and funds promised for 2025 have yet to be distributed, putting the program and tribal consultation at risk.
