Description | The National Green Hydrogen Mission was launched by the Indian government in 2023 with a budget of 197 billion rupees (approximately $2.2 billion). The mission targets the production of 5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of green hydrogen by 2030. However, progress has been slow with 94% of planned capacity still at the announcement stage due to weak demand, higher costs, and lack of storage and transport infrastructure. As of August 2025, only 2.8% of projects are operational and 0.1% under construction. The mission aims to support green hydrogen production to meet India's estimated hydrogen demand of 15-20 MMTPA by 2030, with green hydrogen potentially meeting 25% to 33% of that demand if policies encourage uptake in various sectors. |
