Description | The Government of India notified the National Policy on Geothermal Energy in 2025 to promote geothermal energy for electricity generation and direct-use applications such as district heating, agriculture, aquaculture, and space cooling and heating through Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs). The policy includes provisions for repurposing abandoned oil and gas wells for geothermal energy recovery, technical guidance, pilot demonstrations, and regulatory facilitation. Five projects, including pilot initiatives and resource assessment efforts, have been sanctioned to evaluate the sector's viability. |
