Description | TerraPower has commenced construction on its flagship Natrium plant, Kemmerer Unit 1, in Kemmerer, Wyoming. It is the first utility-scale advanced nuclear power plant to begin construction in the United States. The plant features a 345-megawatt sodium-cooled fast reactor paired with an integrated molten salt-based energy storage system, allowing output to boost to 500 MW during peak demand. The project is delivered by Bechtel as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor. Construction started after the issuance of a construction permit by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, with non-nuclear site work underway since June 2024. The plant is expected to be operational around 2030–2031. |
