This Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) project seeks to improve the technological/productive capacity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), enabling them to supply inputs and/or services to meet the production needs of Multinational High-Tech Enterprises (MHTEs) and to compete globally. Project priorities are tentatively in: (a) plastics; (b) metals and mechanics; and (c) packaging and containers. The three components are: a) a pilot supplier development program linking the SMEs to the production network of the MHTEs, to help satisfy demand for products that the MHTEs currently import; b) an integrated information system, to facilitate links between the two, containing information on supply and demand for products and networking services, business and technological service institutions, the MHTEs and SMEs participating in the project, and sources of financing and of venture capital for the SMEs; andc) establishment of a National Office for Supplier Development, named "Costa Rica - Provee" (with project ownership as of the third year of execution), to ensure the institutional continuity and national character of this initiative. Once established, "Costa Rica - Provee" will be the project's executing agency.
