The Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project is a massive water pipeline project in northwest New Mexico designed to divert water from the San Juan River to the Navajo Nation and nearby areas. The project includes a 300-mile pipeline and aims to provide water to 250,000 Navajo people and the City of Gallup, which is facing dwindling groundwater supplies. The project was authorized by a 2009 law with an original completion deadline of December 2024, later extended to December 2029. The project faces funding gaps and cost overruns, with an estimated $600 million funding gap and total costs rising from $1.6 billion authorized to $2.2 billion estimated.
