It involves Australia's largest ironmaking electric smelting furnace pilot, turning Pilbara iron ore into steel using initially natural gas and aiming to use lower-emissions hydrogen once operational. The project is a joint venture between BlueScope, BHP, Rio Tinto, Woodside Energy, and Mitsui Iron Ore Development. The project includes a $48.8 million front-end engineering design study to prove feasibility and inform a final investment decision expected in 2026, with operations planned to begin in 2028. The state government is investing $75 million towards the project, including infrastructure at Kwinana. |
