The first of class ship, the Neustrashimy, was commissioned in 1993. The design is a slightly larger derivative of the Krivak class, 24 of which were built between 1969 and 1993. Two more ships have been launched Yaroslav Mudry, in 1991 and Tuman in 1993. The construction of Yaroslav Mudry was delayed due to funding issues and was finally delivered to the Russian Navy in June 2009. Tuman was laid up in November 1998 to clear the space of the shipyard. Neustrashimy Class missiles The ship is armed with the Uran anti-ship missile system with two eight-cell launchers (16 missiles). The Uran system launches the Kh-35 cruise missile, which uses inertial guidance with active radar homing. The missile cruises at 15m above sea level, but in the terminal phase drops to a sea-skimming altitude of 3m to 5m. Maximum range is 130km. The Neustrashimy is equipped with the Klinok air defence missile system. Four vertical launch modules, each with eight missiles, are mounted just behind the 100mm gun. The Klinok 9M330 missile (Nato designation SA-N-9 Gauntlet) is produced by the Altair State Research and Production Association and RATEP JSC. The range is from 12km to 15km and the target altitude is from 10,000m to 6,000m. The missile, which is armed with a 15kg warhead, can engage four targets simultaneously up to a maximum target speed of 700m/s. The ship is fitted with the Kashtan (Nato designation SA-N-11 Grisson) air defence gun / missile system, comprising one command system with two combat modules (64 missiles and 600 rounds) mounted either side of the satellite communications dome. Each system is equipped with a 30mm twin Gatling gun, the laser beam guided missile system, and a fire control radar and optronic director. Guns The AK-100 gun system with 350 rounds of ammunition is supplied by the Ametist Design Bureau and the Frunze Arsenal Association. A computer-based multiband control system with electronic and television sighting channels allows the gun to be operated in various modes. The laying and fire control of the gun can be automatically controlled from the artillery radar. A turret-mounted Kondensor optical sighting system provides semi-automatic control. Ammunition which is replenished manually, is fed to the gun via elevators and automatic feed mechanisms. The 100mm gun is capable of a firing rate of 50 rounds a minute, with a range of over 20km. The frigate is also fitted with two CADS-N-1 / Kortik close-in weapon systems. Anti-submarine systems The ship is equipped with a missile and torpedo launch system capable of launching six Vodopad-NK anti-submarine missiles or torpedoes. Vodopad-NK (Nato designation SS-N-16 Stallion) has a maximum range of 120km. The RBU-6000 rocket launcher for the SMERCH-2 anti-submarine system is supplied by the State Unitary Enterprise, Yekaterinburg. It is installed on the raised deck immediately behind the four Klinok launchers. The RGB-60 depth charge rocket has a firing range of 6,000m and the maximum submarine engagement depth is 500m. The system is equipped with 96 rockets. Sensors / radors The 3D air search radar of the ship is MR-760 Fregat-MA. The frigate is also equipped with MR-352 Pozitiv air / surface search radar, MR-360 Podkat missile fire-control radar, MGK-345 Bronza hull mounted LF sonar and Ox Tail LF variable depth sonar. Helicopter The ship has a helicopter landing deck and a hangar which accommodates a single Kamov Ka-27 (Nato codename Helix) helicopter. The Ka-27 is capable of destroying submarines at depths to 500m. The helicopter is able to operate up to 200km from the ship. The helicopter’s sensors provide a submarine detection range of 7.3km by sonar beacon, 0.4km by sonobuoy, 0.4km by magnetometer and 30km by radar for a target area of 250m². Countermeasures The ship has eight ten-barrelled PK-10 decoy launchers which dispense 120mm chaff and flare decoys. The ship also has two 16-barrel PK-16 decoy launchers to jam the radar and optronic systems of incoming guided weapons. The PK-16 launches 82mm decoys from 200m to 1,800m. Propulsion The ship’s COGAG (combined gas and gas) propulsion system consists of two main gas turbines providing 35.7MW and two auxiliary turbines providing 17.8MW, driving two shafts. Maximum speed is 30kt.
