The New Brunswick Community College’s Saint John Campus (NBCC-SJ) is the largest of all NBCC’s campuses. NBCC SJ is home to more than 30 full-time programs, representing more than 1,800 students. Covering about 47 acres, the buildings range in age from two years to 60 years old. Buildings A and B of Grandview Campus were built in the 1960’s and house Carpentry, Industrial Mechanics, Machinist, Plumbing, Steam fitting/Pipefitting programs, plus several student service areas. These buildings are well beyond their life expectancy and present significant challenges in a modern learning environment. The buildings do not meet current accessibility standards limiting NBCC-SJ’s ability to welcome more diverse learners, and lack modern ventilation systems to support construction and industrial trades programs. Accordingly, NBCC-SJ is planning to: 1. Expand the Industrial Trades Education Centre (2018) and relocate all trades programs from existing Buildings A, B and C. 2. Renovate the existing Building C to include upgrades to training spaces, a new lobby and atrium, new learning commons, student services relocation, and new cafeteria. 3. Demolish and decommission existing Buildings A and B to include construction of a new courtyard at their location. This proposal will allow NBCC-SJ to: Develop modern, flexible, multifunctional space; Increase their training capacity by an additional 244 students; and decrease their operating costs (estimated $350,000 annually) and deferred maintenance (estimated $34 million).
