Hyundai E&C jumped into hotel construction by embarking on the construction of Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel, former New Doha Hotel in Qatar, in February 1979. Prior to this, Korea’s primary builder completed the finishing work of its first overseas hotel project of Bahrain’s Diplomat Hotel in September 1978.New Doha Hotel boasts of its distinct pyramid shape: The higher the floor goes, the narrower the building. However, such façade made the hotel construction more challenging. Unlike general building construction projects in which one unit floor plan design is applied across floors, the New Doha Hotel project required a new floor plan for each floor, which increased time and costs. The complex building structure led to frequent changes in the design, and Hyundai E&C responded to over 800 design changes until the construction was completed.The construction works were often carried out based on “not yet finished” designs, leading the builder to work on fast-track construction.However, the New Doha Hotel project bore great significance in history of Hyundai E&C, offsetting difficulties encountered during the construction process. The successful completion of the construction of the almost atypical structure instilled Korea’s primary builder confidence in hotel construction.Although about four decades have passed after the completion of the New Doha Hotel, it still serves as a landmark building in Qatar. It is well known in the country that the hotel was the only large building in the city which was not damaged by heavy rain in 2000. Behind Hyundai E&C’s subsequent achievements in Qatar which ordered mega-sized construction projects including the Amiri Diwan of the State of Qatar and the National Museum of Qatar lay confidence in the builder obtained with the construction of New Doha Hotel.
