New Freight Rail Line in Rhine Valley

Deutsche Bahn has begun constructing a new freight rail line in south-west Germany along the A5 motorway corridor between Offenburg and Müllheim, passing Freiburg. The project aims to increase capacity on the Rhine Valley Railway by providing four tracks in total along sections of the corridor, allowing freight services to shift to the new line and freeing capacity for passenger services on the existing line. The new line will reduce freight traffic through Freiburg and nearby communities, decreasing rail noise. Initial construction focuses on an 11-kilometre section between Riegel and March, with construction expected to take around six years for this segment. The full line extends over 90 kilometres, but completion date for the entire project is not yet set due to pending planning approvals.
