Description
Description | The project includes the design and construction of integrated installations for the management of municipal solid waste (IMSW). A new recycling plant will be built with a view to realising a more circular local economy. In addition, landfill sites will be rehabilitated and a new waste transfer centre will be built.System upgrades to alleviate pressures from tourismThe project aims to serve the waste management needs of the 235 000 people who live in the Limassol district. A strong performance of the tourism industry has seen pressure on the existing waste management systems increase significantly in recent years, and it is hoped that the new system will ease that pressure. In addition to the jobs that will be created during the construction process, 42 permanent positions are expected to be created across the new integrated system. The system itself will be partially self-financing, with revenue generated from user fees and the sale of recycled material.Alongside its direct benefits, the new integrated system will bring Cypriot solid waste management in line with EU regulations. It also contributes to the environmental protection and sustainable development of the area.Total investment and EU fundingTotal investment for the project “Integrated Installations for the Management of Municipal Solid Waste for Limassol District” is EUR 72 638 300, of which the EU’s Cohesion Fund is contributing EUR 46 547 221 from the Operational Programme “Sustainable Development and Competitiveness” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period. Work falls under the priority “Basic infrastructure in the Environmental Sector”. |
