Description
Description | The Project is for the construction of a new building for the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre (MNFC), strategically designed to serve and support the delivery of more than 55 core programs to 7,000 urban indigenous clients living in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). The construction of a more than 10,000 square meters building in downtown Halifax, reflecting the culture and representing the architecture of the indigenous community. The building will be sustainable, resilient, accessible and flexible enough to accommodate multiple community uses. The UC serves one of the fastest growing population in Canada with over 150 staff, and needs a purpose-built facility to help ensure it can sustain and respectfully fill the needs of the communities it serve. The investment will allow MNFC to continue to serve the core community and undertake an expanding role in animating Jordan’s Principle, the recommendations with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S), and United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP). HRM has provided access to a suitable building site and through federal, provincial and private support, the UR believes it will achieve this goal. |
