In June 1995, Lebuhraya Shapadu Sdn Bdh signed a 25-year BOT concession contract with the government of Malaysia to build and operate a 17.5-km expressway to carry heavy vehicles from Bukit Raja to Port Klang. Construction of the New Bypass started in April 1996, and the expected opening date for the road is July 1998. The project costs are US$ 146 million, with an additional US$7.4 million invested in the original bypass. Financing was arranged by the Arab Malaysian Merchant Bank (lead); Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd, and Periwa Affin Bhd. Sponsors invested US$34.4 million as equity. The government provided a US$12.8 million advance for land acquisition and a US$ 18 million support loan.
