Description | The New Pamban Rail Bridge is India's first vertical lift railway sea bridge connecting Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu to the mainland. It replaces the old 2 km-long sea bridge opened in 1914, which was damaged and had rail traffic suspended after cracks were noticed. The new bridge is 2.08 km long, features 99 spans, and a 72.5-metre vertical lift span that rises up to 17 metres to allow larger ships to pass while enabling seamless train operations. It is constructed with stainless steel reinforcement, high-grade protective paint, fully welded joints, and a special polysiloxane coating for corrosion protection. The bridge is designed for dual rail tracks to accommodate future demands and was built at a cost of over Rs 550 crore. |
