Description
Description | Many of us complain that cities are full of cars. Individual transport also produces greenhouse gas emissions. We are therefore focusing our attention on public transport, which will lead to less congestion, cleaner air and less noise in our regions. The new terminal at Svätý Jur is the perfect example of that focus.Gabriela Matečná, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Rural DevelopmentThe terminal is intended to encourage people to make more use of public transport. It offers a central connection point for pedestrian, bicycle, car, bus and train traffic. It connects the town with the centre of the Slovak capital via bus routes and trains. Cyclists and motorcyclists can leave their two-wheelers in a dedicated covered parking area. Park-and-ride, bike-and-ride and kiss-and ride-zones were constructed to ensure stationary traffic does not restrict the movement of public transport. There is a separate parking area for buses and a large car park with 58 spaces.Putting an abandoned terrain to good useThe terminal was constructed on an abandoned terrain located next to the train tracks and which was mostly used for unregulated parking. An underground high voltage line passing through the terminal had to be moved to avoid problems with electricity supply. To increase travel comfort, fixed street furniture was installed and small green areas with trees were set up at various points. The terminal was made barrier-free to ensure it is accessible for people with disabilities. Lighting, security cameras and electronic information boards were installed.New roads, pavements and slopes leading up to the train platforms were built. The pavement’s sidewalks were equipped with audio signals and a warning strip to help guide partially sighted and blind people.Better public transport nationwideOver recent years, Slovakia has invested substantially in its public transport system. A new, modernised fleet of buses, trolleybuses and trams has been acquired and transport terminals are being constructed to provide better connection points and better infrastructure.Plans are underway to build transport terminals in the municipalities of Šenkvice and Malacky, both near Bratislava.Total investment and EU fundingTotal investment for the project “Transfer terminal Svätý Jur” is EUR 612 889, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 306 444 through the “Integrated” Regional Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Safe and environmentally friendly transport in the regions”. |
