The New Safe Confinement (NSC) is a protective structure built over the damaged nuclear reactor 4 at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant to prevent radiation leakage. The NSC was severely damaged by a Russian drone attack in February 2025, which caused a hole in the roof and subsequent fires that compromised the structure's humidity and temperature control, potentially shortening its 100-year design life. Ongoing Russian attacks have hindered repair efforts, making it nearly impossible to start major engineering works to restore the NSC's critical functions under current conditions.
