The New Tokaida Railway Line Project for Japan will construct and equip a new Tokaido railway line from Tokyo to Osaka. The New Tokaido Railway Line will reduce the railroad distance between Tokyo and Osaka, and it will provide fast service between these towns. The project will include trunk-line operations by doubling single-track lines; by electrification of the principal trunk lines and dieselization of branch lines; and by the operation of fast and frequent multiple unit electric and diesel railcar trains and modernizing freight service. The Railways are state-owned and have been organized as a public corporation since 1949. The corporation operates the railway system, road vehicles, ferries, some coal mines and some power plants. The existing railroad as well as the major highways are currently being used beyond its economic capacity. The Railways traffic has developed steadily, and it is expected to increase due to traffic demands, and Japan's economic growth.
