New Waterford Community Wellness Centre

The proposed project is the construction of Community Wellness Centre for the New Waterford area that will serve the community at large including providing program space for seniors, families and youth. The loss of core industries in coal mining and steel making in the Cape Breton area has resulted in economic hardships for many families. This has had a direct impact on children and youth in the area. The Community Wellness Centre Addition project is an approximate 10,400 square foot addition to the New Waterford Hub project - a separate project which currently includes a School, Health Centre and Long-Term Care Facility. The New Wellness Centre is expected to provide improved access to and increased quality of community, cultural and recreational infrastructure in the community of New Waterford. The space will house a youth centre for use outside of a regular school day, after school homework support, life skills, wellness, socialization and mentoring, safe space for youth at risk, music, dancing, art, etc. There is also potential to add users as various community groups and stakeholders link their needs with the new, modern space. The building will be designed to be barrier free and energy efficient.
