Description | More than two dozen solar and wind renewable energy projects in upstate New York, with capacities exceeding 100 megawatts, are fully permitted and ready to start construction but are on hold due to increased costs from tariffs imposed on steel, wind turbine parts, and solar panels. The tariffs have increased project costs by up to 30%, making the contracts financially unviable. Developers want to cancel and rebid contracts to reflect new costs, but the New York State Energy and Research Development Agency (NYSERDA) refuses to allow contract terminations or renegotiations. The projects are eligible for a 30% federal tax credit, which developers have secured, but if the projects do not proceed, New York risks losing about 3 gigawatts of clean energy capacity. |
