Description | Newfoundland and Labrador are moving ahead on plans to build a new $200-million prison using a public-private partnership. Transportation and Works Minister Steve Crocker said Wednesday the private sector will handle construction with the public sector looking after operations. Jerry Earle, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees, said he is comfortable with that approach. Initial requests for proposals are set to be issued this summer. Construction is expected to begin in 2022, with substantial completion in 2024. The facility will roughly double the existing capacity of Her Majesty’s Penitentiary, and include permanent space for female inmates. |
