Description
Description | The objective of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project for Nicaragua is to increase access by project beneficiaries to sustainable water and sanitation services in rural areas. There are four components to the project. The first component is the coverage increases in rural areas. It will support municipalities in increasing coverage of water and sanitation services in their rural territory through investments and technical assistance to communities. The second component is the coverage increases in the south and north autonomous Atlantic regions. It will be strongly coordinated with both regional governments and other donors in order to create a quasi- Sector-Wide Approach (SWAP) for rural investment in the regions. The third component is the pilot projects. This component therefore seeks to develop a series of pilot projects, and the accompanying intervention strategies, making best use of the Bank's international experience and successful models developed in other countries in the region. These pilot projects could serve as the basis for some larger-scale activities in the follow-up rural water and sanitation project planned for FY10, or be picked up by other donors. It will include complementary activities to ensure that the pilots are evaluated, documented, and shared properly. Finally, the fourth component is the institutional strengthening and project management. It will finance all activities aimed at ensuring the sustainability and proper implementation of the project. |
