Description
Description | The Project Development Objective is to improve the availability of selected essential, life-saving goods for COVID-19 response. The proposed AF will increase the cost and scope of the Parent Project. The AF will support the following activities under Component 1 as follows:Component 1: Provision of essential medical and laboratory supplies and equipment (Component cost to increase from US$20.0 million to US$136 million): This component will now have two subcomponents to include additional activities related to vaccine purchase and deployment, and health system strengthening interventions. No retroactive financing is expected under this project.• Subcomponent 1.1 – Covid response and Vaccine Deployment (US$68.1 million): This subcomponent would scale up the activities under the Parent Project for the purchase of critical goods to support readiness for public provision of health services for mild and severe cases of COVID-19, and protection of health care workers against COVID-19 through the acquisition of essential medical and laboratory supplies and equipment for selected hospitals and health facilities responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, this subcomponent would include the following new activities: (a) support vaccine deployment capacity and the quality of integrated care at the first level of service provision for a comprehensive health response to the COVID-19 pandemic; (b) support the functionality and expansion of the cold chain; (c) pandemic preparedness activities by strengthening the Nicaraguan Institute for Health Research and the National Center for Diagnosis and Reference through the expansion of its laboratory capacity; and (d) management of hospital waste and treatment of residual waters.• Subcomponent 1.2 – Acquisition of vaccines and related supplies (US$22.5 million). This subcomponent would be added to support the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines. Vaccine procurement will be done through WHO/PAHO using alternatives that will timely benefit on quality and cost to the country. Vaccines will be provided free of cost to the population. • Subcomponent 1.3 – Strengthening the Health System Response to the pandemic at the health service provision (US$45.4 million). This subcomponent would strengthen the provision of health care for non-communicable and communicable diseases to better cope with the pandemic effects in the short and long term, including medications and the purchase and maintenance of medical equipment. |
