Description

Description

The Rural, Semi-Urban and Urban Electrification Project (PEPERN) is part of a comprehensive program to increase domestic production capacity and electricity access, part of which is funded by other Technical Partners (PTF) included BOAD, IDB, World Bank and AFD. Niger imports more than 70% of its energy consumption; the Bank's intervention will be aimed at reducing this large dependence, which exposes the country to any lesser risk of supply from Nigeria, its major supplier. The project will also help to respond to production shortfalls in the short term while providing immediate solutions to the urgent electricity access needs of the populations in the rural, peri-urban and urban areas concerned. It mainly entails: (i) the construction of electricity infrastructure including the extension of the distribution grid, connecting 46,000 households, and increasing local power capacity by 20 MW, (ii) institutional support through the conducts of feasibility studies for projects in rural areas and (ii) capacity building for energy sector stakeholders. The project will be executed over a four-year period (48 months) from 2017 to 2020.
