Nigeria - Multi-State Health Services Rehabilitation Project I

The first Multi-State Health Services Rehabilitation Project will enhance the institutionalization of measures necessary to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery and cost recovery. There is a rising demand for health care services in Nigeria as a result of poor environmental hygiene, inadequate nutrition, a rapid rate in population, increased awareness through education of the means of providing better health, as well as a national health policy that promotes comprehensive health coverage through the provision of primary health care services. The diminished capacity of Federal and State Government's to support the health sector, which is partly due to an economic down-turn, explains why the need for external financial assistance can not be over-emphasized. The project will comprise the following components : a) rehabilitation/upgrading of existing health facilities, and of supportive healt institutions ; b) provision of medical and/or laboratory equipment ; c) strengthening maintnance of facilities and bio-medical equipment; d) technical assistance in the areas of Health Management Information Systems, drug cost recovery programmes, and manpower training and planing ; e) general strenghtening of primary health care and population activities ; f) establishment of Project Implementation Unit.
