Description | The US-based Unipower Inc, which was majority-owned by Beijing-based Farsighted Investment, acquired the 160MW Nina hydroelectric project in Qinghai province for just over Rmb 1.2 billion (US$145 million). The deal was the first in China in which a private company had bought state-owned generating assets. The partly completed plant on the Yellow River in northwest China was acquired from the state-controlled Qinghai Sanjiang Hydroelectric Development Company. The acquisition was to be the first of a proposed three power station deal aimed at financing additional power plant construction in the province. Qinghai had been suffering from power shortages. The Nina plant was to comprise four 40MW units, one of which entered operation in May 2003. The other three units were scheduled to begin production by the end of 2003. None None |
