Description
Description | An inter-governmental agreement was signed between Russia and Vietnam for cooperation in the construction of the Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power plant in Vietnam. The project includes the construction of two Russian-designed reactors with a combined capacity of 2,400 megawatts (MW). The project is part of Vietnam's strategy to boost power generation capacity and address power shortages caused by increasing demand and extreme weather conditions. The project had been awarded to Russia earlier, and work on nuclear plants in central Vietnam started in the early 2010s but was halted in 2016 due to safety and budget concerns. Vietnam resumed its nuclear energy program in 2024 and requested Japan and Russia to implement the projects, but Japan withdrew in December. |
