Recovery efforts are ongoing following the catastrophic failure and implosion of a large chemical tank containing white liquor at the Nippon paper mill in Longview, Washington. The incident caused severe injuries, chemical burns, extensive damage to the facility, and contamination of the Columbia River. Recovery crews are working in a hazardous environment to recover missing workers, while investigations by the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board are underway. Efforts to dilute contaminated water are also in progress to ensure safe discharge into the river.
