Description | New Jersey Transit is undertaking a mid-life overhaul of its fleet of 429 Alstom-built Multilevel I and II railcars, which are approaching 20 years of service. The overhaul aims to ensure the cars are in good repair, improve reliability and compatibility with new Multilevel III vehicles, enhance passenger comfort with upgraded amenities such as USB charging ports, and promote sustainability with energy-efficient systems and materials. The contract for the overhaul was authorized for up to $917 million, with an additional 10% for contingencies, and the rebuilds are expected to take 10 years, completing in 2036. |
