Description | JSC North-West Telecom (NWT) was partially privatized in 1993 by the Russian government. The government kept operational control over the company holding 51% of voting shares and 38.5% of common shares. NWT provided fixed local telephone services through its own network in the Northwest Region of the Russian Federation, an area with a population of 14.5 million people (10% of national population). 82% of the region’s population is composed of urban residents. The company was headquartered in St. Petersburg. In addition to providing local phone services, NWT was also the region’s base operator, using Rostelecom's infrastructure to provide access to national and international services. NWT also provided Internet, data transmission and telematics services, IN and ISDN services, multiservice network services, leasing of physical channels and trunks and information services. The region’s telecommunication market is Russia’ second in the volume of services rendered. About half of NWT's revenue came from the city of St. Petersburg. In November 2002 NWT was reorganized as one of seven mega-regional companies in which Svyazinvest, the state-controlled holding of company, consolidated its 74 regional fixed line operators. Nine regional companies were consolidated into JSC North-West Telecom: Artelekom of Arkhangelsk region, Elektrosvyaz of Pskov region, Elektrosvyaz of Vologda region and Cherepovets Elektrosvyaz, Murmanskelektrosvyaz, Novgorodtelecom, Elektrosvyaz of Karelia Republic, Elektrosvyaz of Kaliningrad region, Petersburg Telephone Network. The other six mega-regional companies were CenterTelecom, Volga Telecom, South Telecom, Uralsvyazinform, Siberia Telecom and Far East Telecom (Dalsvyaz). As a part of the consolidation process NWT at the end of 2000 took over JSC St.Petersburg telegraph and JSC St.Petersburg MMT through their merger with St.Petersburg Telephone Network. In 2003 Cherepovets Elektrosvyaz merged with Elektrosvyaz of Vologda region to become the only NWT subsidiary operating in the Vologda region. Two other operators Lensvyaz and Republic of KomiSvyaz were expected to merge with NWT in 2004. At the end of 2004 Svyazinvest owned 39.53% of NWT common shares, foreign investors had 38.94%, and employees of the company held 13.92% of shares.
