Description

Description

The project is for construction of three new roads totalling 224 miles and improvement of about 50 miles of feeder roads together with equipment for soil laboratories and control of vehicles. The longest road of 128 miles runs from Baga on Lake Chad to Haiduguri, the terminus of the new Bornu railway extension which has just been completed. This road will open up an agricultural area to year-round traffic and will facilitate the transport of fish from Lake Chad. The Northern Nigerian Government has re-affirmed its intention to expand the fishing industry on the lake. The second road of 82 miles runs from Biu to Gombe, on the new rail extension, through a productive and densely populated area. The road is expected to encourage increased production of such crops as groundnuts, rice, cowpeas, cotton, maize and pepper and will reduce transport costs. The third road of 14 miles is from Maigatari on the Niger border to Gumel on the important road to Kano. This road will provide an all-weather route for traffic and will reduce transport costs. Increased agricultural produce is expected over the road.
