Description
Description | The development objective of the Northern Savanna Biodiversity Conservation Project is to improve the livelihood and health of communities in the northern savanna zone of Ghana, and the environment through the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources including medicinal plants. There are four main project components. The first assists responsible ministries and agencies in defining and institutionalizing effective and long-term resource policies, strategies, and harvesting guidelines by funding consultant services and staff training. The second component finances capacity building and awareness raising for national, regional, and local government agencies; establishes a herbarium in Tamale; develops a GIS-based biodiversity management information system; strengthens the traditional and alternative medicines directorate of the health ministry; gives support to traditional healers associations, traditional birth attendants, and the Ghana Association of Traditional and Alternative Medicines (GHATRAM); and capacity building and awareness raising for civil society and communities. The third component develops biodiversity management and conservation systems for protected area; improves land management and restores degraded lands in six pilots areas; sustains biodiversity in the development of wildlife corridors; sustains medical plant resources; and funds in-situ and ex-situ germplasm. The fourth component supports project management, monitoring and evaluation. |
