Description

The North West Frontier Province (NWFP) On-Farm Water Management Project, aims at reducing rural poverty through increased agricultural production, and increased farm incomes. The components will cover aspects of both the NWFP and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) as follows. 1) The community development and support program, will cover essential aspects of irrigation management, namely, through the operation of the system; collection of water charges; system maintenance; and, rehabilitation, and improvement works. 2) The distributary level improvement program, includes the establishment of offices, supported by technical assistance (TA) to improve the canal system, and, by the repair of distributary gates, rehabilitation of diversion structures, and, improvement of critical sections of the canal, which includes discharges, water measuring structures, and gauges. 3) The watercourse, and on-farm improvements program will allocate investments, focusing on the realignment of irrigation water to improve conveyance of the canal water, and reduce channel deterioration, and water losses. Storage tanks will be constructed; irrigated land will undergo precision land leveling in the canal command, and barani area; and, demonstration centers will be in place to expose sustainable soil, and water management practices. 4) Improvements in branch, and distributary canal systems will support farmer organizations, and the Federation of Water User Association, to include cross regulators, falls, and embankments rehabilitation. 5) The local/minor irrigation schemes development program will improve intermittent, non-perennial streams through appropriate engineering designs, and rehabilitation; and, 6) Project management support will be provided for supervision, monitoring/evaluation, and TA, and training support.
