NR-13 Brant West Shale Gas Well Pad Wastewater Containment

The project involves managing contaminated wastewater seeping from a saturated fill slope at the NR-13 Brant West shale gas well pad in Great Bend Township, Susquehanna County. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) inspected the site after notification of wastewater release and found contaminated fluid seeping into a nearby stormwater bioretention basin and surrounding soil, extending into a tributary flowing into the Susquehanna River. Excavation and construction of unlined sumps were undertaken to collect the wastewater, which is then transported offsite for disposal. The source of the wastewater is assumed to be related to recent shale gas well completion activity at the site.
