The South Korean defense ministry plans to negotiate with the United States to gain access to nuclear fuel necessary for building nuclear-powered submarines. The talks aim to be completed within two years and involve revising bilateral nuclear energy agreements or establishing a standalone deal. The ministry will also develop a detailed blueprint for submarine development, construction plans, and nuclear nonproliferation stance, along with establishing a pangovernment body to designate the project as a national strategic initiative and preparing safety regulations for nuclear reactors in submarines.
