Description

Description

The project involves the preservation and repair of New York City's remaining cobblestone streets, primarily located in historic districts in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. The work is carried out by a specialized crew of bricklayers from the New York City Transportation Department who manually lay granite stones (Belgian Blocks) to maintain these historic streets. The project includes rebuilding cobblestone blocks, such as the one on Greenwich Street near the Holland Tunnel, which was restored to cobblestone in 2010 but required further repairs due to traffic wear. Additionally, a $104-million overhaul project has been conducted since 2019 in Brooklyn's Dumbo and Vinegar Hill neighborhoods, addressing cobblestone streets and underlying water and sewer systems.
