NYC Subway Fare Evasion Prevention Upgrades

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (M.T.A.) in New York City is implementing various physical and operational upgrades to reduce subway fare evasion. These include modifying turnstiles to prevent 'backcocking' by adding new notches to limit arm movement, installing crescent-shaped sleeves on turnstile arms to deter jumping, adding jagged metal 'fins' between turnstiles to prevent leverage for jumpers, and installing emergency doors with a 15-second delay to reduce fare evasion through these doors. Additionally, about 1,000 unarmed gate guards have been deployed to deter fare evasion. The M.T.A. plans to spend $1.1 billion over the next five years to add modern fare gates with tall doors and other features at 150 subway stations, about a third of the system.
