Oahu LNG Electric Power Plant

JERA Co. Inc., Japan's biggest energy producer, is proposing to develop a roughly 500-megawatt power plant on Oahu fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The project aims to cut electricity costs by about 20%, saving an average household $500 a year, reduce carbon emissions by about 20%, and support Hawaii's transition to 100% renewable energy by 2045. The plan includes infrastructure for LNG supply such as a floating storage and regasification unit and supply pipelines. The project could begin producing electricity in 2030 if regulatory approvals and financing proceed without major issues.
