Oak Flat Copper Mine Project

under litigation

The Oak Flat copper mine project involves a land exchange between the U.S. Forest Service and Resolution Copper to develop a giant copper mine at Oak Flat Campground, a site sacred to Indigenous people. The project includes block cave mining, which will create a large crater where Oak Flat currently exists. The land exchange was authorized by Congress over a decade ago and recently completed. Resolution Copper plans to start drilling after court decisions and anticipates opening the mine in the mid-2030s. The project aims to provide domestic copper supply critical for energy, infrastructure, and national defense, and is expected to generate about $1 billion a year in revenues and jobs for the Copper Triangle region.
