Description

The Obelisk project is a large renewable energy initiative in Egypt combining solar power with a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Developed by Norwegian company Scatec, it is located in the Qena Governorate and aims to deliver over 1 gigawatt of clean power. The project includes a 100 MW / 200 MWh battery storage system to store excess solar energy for use during high demand or low sunlight periods, improving grid stability and reliability. It is expected to generate around 3,000 GWh of clean electricity annually and reduce carbon emissions by about 1.4 million metric tonnes per year. The project is supported by international financial institutions and is planned for completion by 2026.
