Description | OceanWell is developing an underwater desalination system called Water Farm I, located about 4.5 miles off the coast of Malibu in Santa Monica Bay. The system uses large purification pods on the ocean floor that harness natural ocean pressure to push seawater through reverse osmosis membranes, making ocean water drinkable. This method is more energy efficient than traditional onshore desalination and produces a brine byproduct that is only about 10% saltier than ambient ocean water. |
