OctoFlexBW Electric Vehicle Grid Stabilisation Project

German grid operator TransnetBW and its partner Octopus Energy completed the OctoFlexBW project to test the use of electric vehicles (EVs) to stabilise power grids. The project established digital and energy industry-compliant processes to unlock the flexibility potential of over 700 vehicles, delivering a daily dispatch volume of 2 MWh. Extrapolated to 1 million EVs, this could provide up to 500 GWh of energy annually to the power grid, corresponding to 3-5% of Germany's total annual redispatch needs. The project also plans to include heat pumps, home storage systems, and air conditioning for grid congestion management in the future. TransnetBW and Octopus Energy plan to continue their collaboration with the DataFleX research project, connecting over 1,000 electric vehicles and home storage systems to provide flexibility.
