Description
Description | Core problem The currently available irrigated areas in the Office du Niger (ON) area in central Mali are not yet sufficient to provide the rapidly growing population there with an adequate livelihood. While the demand for irrigated areas continues to rise sharply, the average size of small farms has shrunk over the years from an ideal 3 ha to around 1.6 ha, making sustainable and profitable operations more difficult. As a result, the agricultural production of large parts of the population in the project region is not sufficient to ensure their food security and a sufficient income, as well as the payment of water fees and thus the sustainable operation of the irrigation infrastructure by the Office du Niger. Module objective The agricultural productivity of small farmers has improved through the rehabilitation and expansion of irrigation and drainage infrastructure in the Office du Niger area (NDébougou zone). Key outputs Irrigation and drainage infrastructure have been properly renovated or built; the ON and the users of the land are able to manage and cultivate it appropriately; the planned environmental measures have been implemented and the management of land rights has been improved. Target group The target group of the project is the rural population in the region, in particular six villages (approx. 16,000 people, of whom more than 50% are women and girls). Contribution to the national implementation of Agenda 2030 The module contributes to the achievement of the following of the 17 agreed goals: no poverty, no hunger, gender equality, clean drinking water and sanitation, decent work and economic growth, climate protection and adaptation |
