Players take on the role of Zeb, a 16-year-old boy, and Maja, a 52-year-old woman; two unlikely companions who must work together to find or construct a new, livable world. As they journey through space, they encounter diverse planets, each with unique environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures, special natural resources, or other unique traits. A key mechanic in Offworld Odyssey is the use of spatial portals. These are a new mechanic that allow players to bridge vast distances. Players must automate resource extraction and refinement, energy production, and figure out how to use their systems in combination with the unique properties of the planets they encounter through the use of these spatial portals. The game’s decision-driven storytelling ensures that player choices influence not only the survival of humanity but also the evolving relationship between Zeb and Maja. Along the way, Zeb and Maja reflect on the failures that doomed Earth: fascism, misinformation, and the unchecked power of AI.
