Description | The Ohio River Tunnel is the first of three tunnels to be excavated under the streets of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It is designed to capture and treat more stormwater and raw sewage that pollute rivers during heavy rainfalls, reducing combined sewer overflow by 70 percent in a typical year. The tunnel will run 4.9 miles (7.9 kilometers) underground, more than 150 feet deep, with a diameter of 14-18 feet and eight shafts along its length. It will connect to about 5 miles of existing deep tunnel interceptors and work alongside a Wet Weather Pump Station at the water treatment plant to handle excess water and sewage during storms. |
