Description
Description | The project envisages the modernization of the Olkaria geothermal power plant park to increase electricity generation capacity from renewable energies and to ensure its availability. For the project, a subsidized loan of up to EUR 49 million is to be made available to the Kenyan government for onward transfer to the Kenyan electricity supplier Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen). The project is linked to the two completed FC projects Olkaria I and IV geothermal power plants (BMZ No. 2001 66 678) and expansion of the Olkaria I and IV geothermal power plants (BMZ No. 2009 65 335). In the first project, the drilling of the geothermal wells, which contribute to the steam supply to the power plant, was co-financed by the FC. The second, subsequent project supported the state-owned power company Ken-Gen in the construction of the geothermal power plants Olkaria I AU (Additional Units) and Olkaria IV as part of a joint financing with AFD, EIB, JICA and the World Bank. The project represents an expansion of the generation capacity of these power plants by 40 MW to approximately 320 MW. The additional measures to modernize the IT infrastructure of the geothermal power plant park are primarily aimed at improving the business continuity plans, the security of the geothermal data center network and the introduction of a Scada system for the Geothermal Central Command Center (CDC). |
